Trip Overview

The Explore Nepal Tour is our most complete introduction to the country in a single, unhurried journey. In ten days you travel from the temple-filled cities of the Kathmandu Valley to the sal forests of Chitwan and the lakeside calm of Pokhara, with a sunrise on the rim of the valley at Nagarkot along the way. It is designed for travellers who want to see the real breadth of Nepal, its living culture, wildlife and mountain scenery, without trekking for days to reach it.

The first part of the tour is spent in the Kathmandu Valley, whose seven monument zones together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you visit every one of them. With a licensed guide you explore the royal squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath, the great dome of Boudhanath, the riverside temples of Pashupatinath and the ancient carvings of Changu Narayan. A night at Nagarkot, at 2,175 m on the valley rim, brings sunrise over the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges, followed by a gentle walk down through farming villages to Changu Narayan.

From the hills we drive down to the subtropical Terai and Chitwan National Park, Nepal’s first national park and another World Heritage Site. Two nights at a jungle resort allow time for a dugout canoe trip on the Rapti River, a guided jungle walk, a jeep safari in search of the one-horned rhinoceros and a visit to a Tharu village. The journey then continues to Pokhara, where the Annapurna range and the fishtail summit of Machhapuchhre rise directly above Phewa Lake. Sunrise from Sarangkot, a boat ride to the island temple of Tal Barahi and the walk up to the World Peace Pagoda are among the highlights, before a short scenic flight returns you to Kathmandu.

Who is this trip for?

This tour suits first-time visitors, families, couples and small groups of friends, as well as returning trekkers who want to see more of Nepal below the mountains. The pace is comfortable, the hotels are chosen for location and service, and private transport is used throughout. There is no high altitude and no long-distance walking, so a normal level of fitness is enough.

Nima Adventure is based in Boudha, Kathmandu, and the tour is run by our own local team, led by Managing Director Kanchha Sherpa. Every departure can be run privately and adjusted to your dates and interests, whether that means adding Lumbini, a short trek from Pokhara or an extension to Tibet, Bhutan or India.

Itinerary

A Nima Adventure representative meets you outside the arrivals hall at Tribhuvan International Airport and drives you to your hotel. After a rest, we hold a short briefing on the days ahead, check your documents and answer questions about money, SIM cards and local customs. If you arrive early, take an easy first walk through the lanes of Thamel or around the great stupa at Boudha, where our office is based. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner of Nepali dishes with our team. Overnight in Kathmandu.

With a licensed city guide, we begin at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old royal palace complex of the Malla and Shah kings and home of the Kumari, the living goddess. Next we climb to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa with sweeping valley views and resident monkeys. After lunch we visit Pashupatinath, Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple on the banks of the Bagmati River; non-Hindus view the main shrine from the opposite bank. We end at Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, joining pilgrims on their evening circuit. Overnight in Kathmandu.

This morning we cross the Bagmati River to Patan, the city of fine arts, where the Krishna Mandir, the Golden Temple and the Patan Museum show Newar craftsmanship at its best. We continue east to Bhaktapur, the best-preserved of the valley's three royal cities, to see the five-storey Nyatapola Temple, the 55-Window Palace and the potters at work in Pottery Square. Try juju dhau, the city's famous curd. Late in the afternoon we drive about an hour up to Nagarkot on the valley rim for sunset over the Himalaya. Overnight in Nagarkot.

Rise early for sunrise from Nagarkot, when the first light catches a long line of peaks including the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. After breakfast we follow a gentle trail of about 3 hours, mostly downhill, through terraced farmland and small villages to Changu Narayan, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Nepal and the seventh of the valley's World Heritage monument zones. Travellers who prefer not to walk can drive instead. From here it is a short drive back to Kathmandu, with the afternoon free for shopping or rest. Overnight in Kathmandu.

We leave Kathmandu after breakfast and follow the Prithvi Highway down the Trishuli River valley, then turn south at Mugling towards the plains of the Terai. The drive takes 5-6 hours depending on traffic and road works. On arrival at our resort near Sauraha, on the edge of Chitwan National Park, we have lunch and settle in. In the late afternoon, a naturalist guide leads a walk to a Tharu village to learn about the indigenous people of the Terai, followed by sunset on the banks of the Rapti River. Overnight in Chitwan.

Chitwan was Nepal's first national park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The day starts with a dugout canoe ride on the Rapti River, looking out for gharial and mugger crocodiles and kingfishers, followed by a guided jungle walk. After lunch, a jeep safari takes us deeper into the sal forest and grassland, where one-horned rhinoceros, spotted deer, wild boar and many bird species are regularly seen. Tigers and sloth bears live here too, though sightings are rare. In the evening, watch a Tharu cultural dance programme in the village. Overnight in Chitwan.

After an early breakfast we drive north to Mugling and west along the Prithvi Highway to Pokhara, Nepal's lakeside city at the foot of the Annapurna range. The journey takes 5-6 hours, with stops for tea along the way. After checking in at your hotel near Phewa Lake, take a relaxed stroll along the lakeshore, where the snow peak of Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail, often appears above the water on clear afternoons. Dinner tonight is your choice from the many lakeside restaurants. Overnight in Pokhara.

An early drive takes us up to Sarangkot (about 1,600 m) for sunrise over Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhre. Back in town after breakfast, we visit Devi's Fall, the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave across the road and the International Mountain Museum, which tells the story of Himalayan climbing. In the afternoon, take a boat to the island temple of Tal Barahi, then cross Phewa Lake for a hike of about 45 minutes up to the World Peace Pagoda, with views back over the lake and city. Overnight in Pokhara.

After breakfast we transfer to Pokhara airport for the 25-minute flight back to Kathmandu, with the Himalaya stretching along the northern horizon on clear days. If you prefer the road, the scenic drive takes 6-7 hours. The afternoon is free for last-minute shopping in Thamel or Boudha for thangka paintings, pashmina, singing bowls and tea, or simply to rest. This evening we gather for a farewell dinner with a cultural performance, a good chance to share stories from the journey. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Your tour ends today. Depending on your flight time, there may be a chance for a final walk around Boudhanath or a last cup of masala tea before our team drives you to Tribhuvan International Airport, ideally about three hours before an international departure. If you would like to extend your stay, we can arrange a mountain flight past Everest, a short trek in the Annapurna or Langtang regions, or onward travel to Tibet, Bhutan or India. We hope to welcome you back to Nepal soon.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. There is no trekking on this tour, only short walks around heritage sites, the gentle downhill trail from Nagarkot to Changu Narayan, which can be replaced by a drive, and the 45-minute hike to the World Peace Pagoda. Children usually love the canoe ride and jeep safari in Chitwan. Let us know about any mobility needs and we can adjust the pace, choose hotels with lifts and allow extra rest time.

October to April is the most comfortable period. Autumn brings clear skies and the main festival season, while late winter and spring are good for wildlife viewing in Chitwan as the grass is shorter. December and January are cool in Kathmandu, with morning fog at times in the Terai. The monsoon, from June to September, is hot and humid and cloud often hides the mountains, although the tour still runs.

Most nationalities can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or apply online shortly before travelling. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and it helps to complete the online arrival form before you fly. Indian citizens do not need a visa. Rules are set by Nepal's Department of Immigration and can change, so please check the current requirements before you travel; we are happy to advise.

In Kathmandu and Pokhara we use comfortable, well-located tourist-standard hotels with private bathrooms, chosen for cleanliness and service. In Nagarkot the hotel is chosen for its mountain views, and in Chitwan you stay at a jungle resort close to the park. Rooms are twin-sharing, and single rooms can be arranged on request. If you prefer boutique heritage hotels or international chains, we can upgrade any part of the tour.

Chitwan is home to Bengal tigers, but they are shy and mostly active at night, so a sighting is a matter of luck. One-horned rhinoceros, deer, crocodiles, monkeys and a wide variety of birds are seen far more often. Your naturalist guide knows the park well and will make the most of each activity. We do not include elephant-back rides; the jeep safari, canoe trip and jungle walk give a more natural experience.

Yes, every departure can be run privately and adjusted to your interests. Popular additions include Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, a short trek from Pokhara such as Poon Hill or Australian Camp, an Everest mountain flight, white-water rafting on the Trishuli River, or extensions to Tibet, Bhutan or India. Tell us how many days you have and what interests you, and our team in Kathmandu will put together a revised plan.

Nepal is generally a safe and welcoming country, and our guides look after you throughout the tour. Normal precautions apply: keep valuables secure in busy places, drink bottled or filtered water and follow your guide's advice at temples and in the national park. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical treatment, trip cancellation and loss of belongings, as road delays and flight cancellations can occasionally happen in Nepal.
